Working Shifts at University Hospitals Plymouth

 

Trust ID Swipe Card (Mandatory for all roles)

All NHS Professionals Bank Member must get a Trust ID card. This will give you swipe access to wards and clinical areas that you will be working in. To get a Trust ID card:

 

Wait for your NHS Professionals ID badge to arrive in the post.

Take your NHS Professionals ID badge to one of the drop-in clinics at Derriford Hospital:

Monday to Friday 11.00 to 12.00 (ID Office Level 5 (down the stairs next to parking desk on level 6, follow the blue ID signs to the office)).

Collect your Trust ID card from the parking desk (usually available the following day).

Electronic Prescribing Medicines Administration System (RNs and other Prescribing staff)

At University Hospitals Plymouth the only way to prescribe or administer medications and view drug charts is via Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (ePMA) system. All Registered Nurses must get access to the ePMA system by following the instructions below:

  1. Make sure you have access to University Hospitals Plymouth IT Network. If you don’t already have a UHP username and password to log in to Trust computers, complete and sign the network account form and return to us at the address on the form. Alternatively you can scan and email the form to plymouthictservicedesk@nhs.net. You must handwrite your signature. If you don’t have a Trust line manager to sign the ‘Sponsor’ section of the form NHSP can sign this on the Trust’s behalf.
  2. Complete your e-learning.

NerveCentre: Patient Safety IT System (for Emergency Department)

The Nervecentre Patient Safety System is now the only way to add observations and patient information in ED. This means that if you are to work in the Emergency Department you will need to complete training to access this system by following the instructions below:

  1. Make sure you have access to University Hospitals Plymouth IT Network. If you don’t already have a UHP username and password to log in to Trust computers, complete and sign the network account form and return it to us at the address on the form. Alternatively, you can scan and email the form to plymouthictservicedesk@nhs.net. You must handwrite your signature. If you don’t have a Trust line manager to sign the ‘Sponsor’ section of the form NHSP can sign this on the Trust’s behalf.
  2. During working hours (9-5 Monday-Friday), at the start of your shift, if you haven’t got a Nervecentre account please see Damian Pudner or Aimee Bickham who are based in the ED Secretaries office. They will provide you with training and help you process your access request. This will save you from having to use a temporary account.
  3. Out of working hours, please complete the following training link at the beginning of your next ED Shift
    1. E-learning for Registered Nurses and Care Support Workers/HCAs
    2. E-learning for Administration Staff
    3. E-learning for Portering Staff

After completion, please email plymouthictservicedesk@nhs.net confirming you have completed your training. IM&T can then action your request and grant access to your account (subject to having an active network account).

  • You will need to complete 100% of the Nervecentre training e-learning and pass the quiz. Follow the guidance at the end of the e-learning to request access to the Emergency Department Nervecentre.

Blood Glucose Machines (Clinical staff including RNs and CSWs/HCAs)

If you are required to take blood glucose readings as part of your role, you will need to complete blood glucose machine training to obtain a blood tracking number. This is a barcode that will be added to the back of your Trust ID swipe card that you will scan each time you take a blood glucose reading. To complete the training, follow the steps below:

  1. Make sure you have access to University Hospitals Plymouth IT Network. If you don’t already have a UHP username and password to log in to Trust computers, complete and sign the network account form and return to us at the address on the form. Alternatively you can scan and email the form to plymouthictservicedesk@nhs.net. You must handwrite your signature. If you don’t have a Trust line manager to sign the ‘Sponsor’ section of the form NHSP can sign this on the Trust’s behalf.
  2. Make sure you have a Trust ID Swipe card (this is additional to your NHSP badge - see instructions above if you do not have a Trust ID card).
  3. When you attend your first shift book training with a link trainer on a ward (most wards have link trainers for all clinical devices). Once training is completed you will be sent a link to complete a quiz. Once the quiz has been passed (80% pass mark) you will automatically be certified and be able to use the device at midnight of the day of completion.

Parking

  • Staff Car Park - NHS Professionals Bank Members can apply for a parking permit at the Trust however there are limited spaces and therefore a pass is not guaranteed. To find out more, you can visit the parking desk the parking desk located in main reception on level 6 Derriford hospital or call the Saba Team on 01752 432000.
  • Park & Ride - Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust has a nationally renowned green travel plan and encourages the use of public transport among staff, patients and visitors, wherever possible. There is a public park and ride site located north of Derriford Hospital at the George junction (opposite the George Pub/Hotel). Parking is FREE, although you will need to purchase a ticket to travel on the bus. This is ideal for patients and visitors including disabled badge holders travelling from the north of the City to Derriford Hospital. The journey time is around 10 minutes. For the latest information, including timetables and ticket prices, about the George Park and Ride:
