Main duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
- To be able to work in all areas of midwifery practice according to service needs.
- To work as an autonomous practitioner within the community & hospital setting, recognising any medical, obstetric or neonatal problems that arise and referring women or babies to the appropriate medical support.
- As required dependant on rotation allocation participate in a community rota and in the 24 hour on-call system
- Develop and maintain the clinical skills and knowledge necessary to provide individualised, clinically effective, evidence based midwifery care, as reflected within the Scope of Professional Practise and to be competent in the following
Midwifery led care
Neonatal and adult resuscitation
Supporting women choosing to labour and give birth in water
Supporting breast feeding in line with the trust policy
Perineal repair
Interpreting cardiotocograph recordings
Theatre scrubbing
- To work in partnership with the midwifery team and managers reporting problems/concerns relating to clinical practice.
- To ensure that all policies and procedures relating to drug storage, administration and record keeping are adhered to.
- To ensure the provision of excellent, evidence based care for the women and their families.
- To act as an advocate for the women ensuring the provision of appropriate information and support services.
- Communicate effectively, promoting open and trusting relationships.
- To be aware of the uses, safety precautions and handling of equipment.
- To assist in the development and review of policies and standards for the safe use of equipment and any new equipment introduced to the team.
- Participate in and assist in the planning and implementation of programmes of parent education offered to women and their partners.
- To be aware of the George Elliot’s Strategic Plan and be part of change management to ensure Choice, access and continuity of care in a safe service and to contribute where able to the development of the service to meet these strategies.
